Her particular interests lie in assay development and Kelly was part of the team at Queens University Belfast (QUB) that originally came up with the idea of developing an assay for measuring the active form of neutrophil elastase in sputum from patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis and COPD.
Kelly holds a BSc (Hons) in Natural Sciences with Biology and a PhD in Biomolecular Science (QUB). She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Ulster and is an accredited PRINCE2 practitioner. Kelly is a Professional Associate for Biology for the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment in Northern Ireland and a UK Scientific Ambassador for Biology.
